Crabbing is one of my favourite past time during summer days in WA (summer in WA runs from Dec till Feb). I normally visit Mandurah at the end of January to net some crabs. I do find this time the best! It can be unpredictable however. Sometimes crabs can be found at the end of Dec!
When crabbing, I prefer the scooping method using the scoop net. I normally scoop crabs from the Peel Inlet in Mandurah: please click on link for location: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&xhr=t&q=mandurah&cp=3&wrapid=tljp129726460901222&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Mandurah+WA&gl=au&ei=969STcHdA9Cecdv33Z8H&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&sqi=2&ved=0CCcQ8gEwAA
Perfect weather (not overly windy-makes the waters choppy and therefore hard to see crabs ,etc) is what we hope for while scooping crabs out from the inlet. Please note that crabs in WA must be caught at the legal size. The indicator of the legal size and for more information please visit the Department of Fisheries WA website.
Proper closed shoes should be worn at all times because they protect the feet. Insect repellant is required. You need a powerful underwater torch if scoop crabbing at night. Clothes to change, you may need to wear enough clothes to keep warm. Some times during summer moments, you may not need a jumper (also known as a sweater, etc) to stay warm while scoop crabbing. Other times during summer it may not. Ah! I forgot. You would need a foam eski to contain the crabs; foam eskis should really be at a good size to hold or tied to yourself while scoop crabbing. Alternatively you can go in groups of 2-3 people per group and take turns in scoop crabbing, holding eskis, etc. I think we have a winning recipe here. Here's some photos with the crabs we caught off the Peel Inlet in Mandurah this summer season:
